Has anyone upgraded to Lightroom 2.0 yet? Would you recommend paying for the upgrade? What new features do you find useful? I just downloaded the 30 day trial but have not fired it up yet.

I upgraded to Lightroom 2, I have processed 2 photos with it so far, check the photo for july 29th (in this case only used the adjustment brush to lower the exposure in a small part of the photo) and july 30th in my photoblog (when it is available. Church of the Light ), completely processed in lightroom using the Graduated Filter and Adjustment Brush tools, new features for the development module, In that particular case it served the purpose of adjusting areas of strong contrast from overexposed to underexposed areas, a workflow that I would have processed as HDR. The library module was also improved, it is supposed that you can keep better organization of your catalog and find photos faster. For me what is worth is the develop module, giving me more flexibility to be able to use my tablet with the adjustment brush in order to make localize adjustments and masking, also the vignetting if you like using it has the option of adding it after crop. Any further comments I will write as I try it more, so far, happy with it!

Thanks for sharing that... I used the brush tool in my photo for today
    http://jason.aminus3.com/image/2008-07-30.html

The landscape was quite dark compared to the sky and I was able to brush in some selective brighter exposure for what appears to me to be a very natural and pleasing result.

I like the brush feature as I typically only used Photoshop CS3 when I needed to make localized adjustments that I could not do in Lightroom 1.1. Now I think I can do a lot more in Lightroom and not have to use CS3 much at all. I think I am convinced that it is worth the cost to upgrade :)

I will probably have to get used to the fact that they moved a lot of stuff around, like the tools previously in the bottom are now on the left etc - but overall, I think I can adapt.

I saw your photo, it came out nicely with the processing. Yesterday I was trying the adjusment brush tool for doing selective desaturation, I am happy with the result, you will be able to see it for the photo of August 1st, I believe this version of Lightroom simplifies my workflow, don't think I will be using Photoshop that much. But I think they need to do some slight adjustments, for example, when you use the lights dim out and you are working on the details panel of the development module, the preview of the sharpening in the panel keeps dark, so if you don't want to zoom for doing the adjustments, you have to 'turn on the lights' so you can see that small preview. Other things so far I am still checking, I tried running in 64-bit in the Macbook Pro, as they say you can do it now, but I felt it was taking lots of memory resources, so I changed to 32-bit mode, that is my impression, I will check that with more care to know what is the performance on both modes. I also noticed that .dng files that have been processed using either the graduated filter or adjustments brush increase in size, maybe it has to do with something in the previews of the files, for example the photo of the Church of the Light previously mentioned, got to 11mb from 5.5 mb, and the one processed with selective desaturation increased from around 5 mb to 7.5 mb, I am still trying to find a reason, maybe I should check the adobe forums!

Your photo was great Jason! Just a quick question! I have downloaded the trial of Lightroom 2 but not installed it yet. Does it overwrite the existing version installed, or can we run both versions at once. Don't want to install it just yet or my trial will run out before I have time to investigate it properly. Hopefully, will try it out very soon!

    Cheers!

    Hello Anne,

I am using Mac OS and when I installed the new version of Lightroom, it didn't install over the previous one, in fact I still have Lightroom 1 installed, I don't know in the case of windows, but I think it should not install on top of it, for example for other applications of adobe, If I remember you can have adobe cs2 and adobe cs3 installed and the latest was not installed on top of the previous.

Thanks parallax! I asked because when I bought the first Lightroom, it installed right over the beta I had been running for quite a long time, and the beta was gone! No! I don't have a Mac - I am using Windows Vista. Thanks again :-)

Hi Anne - I am on Mac as well and there is not the same "installation" process as windows so I'm not sure. You may want to try a quick google search to see if anyone has commented on this. I would think it is possible to have version 1 and 2 co-exist but can't say for sure.

i'm running Lightroom 1.4x and 2.0 side by side. the 2.0 installer removes the beta 2 version only. best...jf

Lightroom 2. though i possess advanced photoshop editing skills, my personal photographic philosophy has reverted to straight b/w photography with minimal processing. LR 2 fulfills all my needs excepting the ability to "soft proof" for fine art printing. I have other reasons for keeping CS3 on my disk, but personal image processing is not one.

i provide private tutoring in digital imaging and am gradually converting my students to Lightroom. [8 new installs this week] in addition to the concept of layers, the biggest obstacle in tutoring digital imaging is file management. where did it go, where is my file, i don't know where i saved it? Lightroom has removed both headaches from the equation.

while it would be impossible to satisfy every individual requirement, this build is significant. i'm equally impressed that the Lightroom team has listened to the users. best...jf

I am glad that Anne asked if it overwrites the Lightroom 1, because I was considering installing the trial. I have a Mac.

What I wonder about also is if I download the trial will all my current lightroom imported files be in 1 or 2 or both? In other words all the old files will only be available as imported into 1 and any imports to 2 will only be in 2 or are they cross referenced to both? (I hope I explained that correctly).
  6.
Lightroom 2.0 imported my Lightroom 1.4 catalog, but the Lightroom 1.4 catalog remained intact. There is no cross referencing as such, but you can have a "watched folder" under file > auto import. on a mac, under image capture you can also set the action to occur on mounting a card etc. I can assure you once you take the demo for a test drive you will want the upgrade. I will keep LR 1 for 90 days because some of the people I support have it installed, and as I have been using beta 2 for months, I forget where some of tools etc. were located and have to fire it up for reference ; ] best...jf

Thanks so much. That helps with the decision. I will give the trial version a test drive and I am sure I will probably love it as I do the original,

I'm liking Lr 2 a lot, as it handles .jpg's much better than 1.4 did. I need to work with the brush features some more to get the effects a bit subtler. I'll probably wind up using the clarity effect with the brush mostly, detailing the subject in my macro shots to make them stand out a little more.

the brushes work well with an inexpensive bamboo fun.
