We recently added a slideshow feature to all Aminus3 member blogs. To see the slideshow you need to install a third party browser plug-in called PicLens. PicLens displays the photos from your RSS feed using a very cool 3D Wall effect or as a standard slideshow.
You can download the plug-in here:
http://www.piclens.com
Once the plug-in is installed, you should see a little triangle in the corner of your main photo and thumbnail photos. Click on the triangle to launch the PicLens viewer.
If you have some thoughts on the PicLens experience or would like to suggest a feature, please post it in this thread. We are looking at adding PicLens feeds to other areas of the site like color schemes, Spotlight images, community daily photo etc so stay tuned!
The PicLens plug in is great Jason, I have had it for a while - I would recommend it! The only thing I have to shut it down for is on other sites that it works, facebook, etc., the images aren't posted as large as ours and one gets horrible pixelation of small images when PicLens is opened full screen - but for the quality of images on am3 it is great!
Very cool the Piclens plugin, a different experience to see the photos with that slide show. I have a question regarding the compression, when posting in aminus3 you have to post as 800 pixels maximum for the horizontal or they are compressed to that size, looking at the photos with the slideshow looks great when they are as thumbnails in the slideshow, but isolating them to full screen displays them bigger than the size posted in the photoblog and you can't see them as sharp as they are in 800 pixels. I guess that when the Larger or full size image display will be available if you want it, what I mentioned won't be a problem.
Parallax - we don't have a solution at the moment for the larger image display that you mentioned. We will probably offer something in the A+ membership such as larger image uploads so that the slideshow looks good at larger sizes and screen resolution.
There is also a limitation in PicLens. For every photo (even when only displaying thumbnails), I believe Piclens is loading both the thumbnail and full sized image. This means that adding larger images will likely make everything load much slower.
An other amelioration is always good. Not sure I will use it as I rarely use the slide show option on other web site. As you are thinking about picLens for the community daily photo, I would prefer an option where I can see the pictures in bigger size that the actual thumbnail, one picture below the other on 1 page (or a bit more) and scroll all the pictures of the day. I don't know if it is possible but I find it very convenient when I see that kind of display in some web sites. Example: http://www.flickriver.com
For some reason, I can't seem to get it to work. I followed instructions, and I see the little play button on other websites, but I don't see it on any of the am3 sites. Do you know why that is? Thanks!
The PicLens plugin is one of the coolest addons which I've been using with Firefox for the longest... I was very happy when Aminus3 implemented it on the site. (THANKS!) Though, I wish it would be also added to the Community Thumbnail and/or the Aminus3 Spotlight page... The reason: since the users RSS feeds were somehow updated for the PicLens, now I am able to use the Google ScreenSaver and the Roxio MediaTicker with the AM3 images, thus making my AM3 experience a much better one! :-) --> Thanks AM3 for the Great work!
Grrr, Since I changed to Vista IE 7 no longer works correctly with PicLens, oh well I guess Firefox it is then, works great with that. Maybe in the future the fine folks at Piclens will get it sorted.
Great idea Jason! I like the VR feel of the wall. Shame about the quality of the large image on the slideshow, but if you really want to look at photos in that way you are better off in the Portfolio. I think it's a great viewing tool. Thanks.
I've been using Pic Lens for quite a long time now and its fine for reasonably large, good quality photos. But with my monitor being 1400 x 900 most of the images are degraded quite a bit. It's not just PicLens, but the PowerPoint slide shows people send to me with pictures made in XP and a smaller monitor are just terribly pixelated when stretched out!. I wanted to see one particular slide show and so changed the resolution of my monitor for a while - but can't leave it like that - its so awful for regular work as 1400 x 900 is the default size.
I really like the idea of PicLens. It works well, for me. I have a few comments that I would like to share.
First, if I use the large image display, the PicLens play button does not appear on the main image, only on the thumbnails for before and after images. It works fine if I choose small display.
Second, if I enable the previous and next directional arrow overlays, I can't get to the play button, as it is beneath the arrow overlay. And of course, this is only on the small images, because it doesn't display at all on the large images.
And third, would it be possible to place a link on the page to inform viewers of the availability of this technology. I realize other Aminus3 members will probably know about it, but I have viewers that are not members. And I had no prior knowledge of PicLens until I saw it posted here. I think it is great, and would like an easy way for people to find out about it. Thanks for making it available.
The PicLens images are based on your main site RSS feed. One of the additional feeds we will add is a portfolio feed which should allow you to see all your portfolio images in a PicLens slideshow.
I can get it to work on my Flickr page but not AM3. Oh sorry. I thought I would see the little arrow on the main photo. But there it is in the thumbnails on the side.
hope that they get something similar that is built-in for aminus. maybe even offer it to the A+ members? oh and i know its off-topic but wish the watermarks will be working soon!
Can you describe what is the exact problem you are facing with the watermarks feature? Remember that you need to turn it on in your settings or image upload page. Watermarks are created only when you upload an image. Images already uploaded which dont have watermarks will not get affected.
I wonder if perhaps carlospalma is referring to the "custom watermarks coming soon!" feature for A+ members. Actually, I myself have been curious as to when this feature might be released... :)
The Am3 team is currently testing this feature along with some other features and we expect to put it to beta for A+ members in a few weeks from now. You can to have control on the text, the font , size, color, opacity and position of your watermark.
I had been using Pic Lens for a while and then they offered an upgrade and it became 'Cooliris' ... same program but a different name. I love using it here on Aminus3 when, for example, a user doesn't put many photos in their portfolio. I just click on the 'arrow' in the previous day's posting and voila..........the 3 D wall of photos appears. I love it!
