On the image upload page is a field called Tags. This is not a required field, but can be useful to help you organize your own images and get more visibility across the whole of Aminus3.
1) Capitalization All tags are converted to lower case so it is OK to simply type all tags in lower case at the start
2) Spaces and hyphen All tags are separated by spaces " " If you want to use a tag with more than one word, we recommend using a hyphen "-"
so for example, "new york" should be tagged as "new-york"
3) Ampersand "&" We don't read in an Ampersand character so a tag of "black&white" will be converted to "black-white" or "b-w"
4) Language Support You are free to create tags in any language you choose.
5) Length Tags of 3 letters or more are recommended
6) Plural or singular? It is best to stick to a convention, for simplicity, singular is probably best (meaning words without an "s" on the end)
For example - using the tag "girl" instead of "girls" is preferred, or "cloud" instead of "clouds".
7) Tags as collections Since you can search any image on your blog by tag on the archive page or through a direct URL, it is useful to use tags to separate images into meaningful categories. For example, if I want to see all the images on my blog from Brussels, I can simply go to this URL http://jason.aminus3.com/tag/brussels/
It is possible to put any tag you want at the end and you will see a collection of those images.
This is also true across the whole Aminus3 community. For example, if I want to see every photo on Aminus3 tagged with "Flower", I can use this URL http://www.aminus3.com/tag/flower/
This provides an excellent way for you to get more exposure on your blog and images as more and more people utilize the site-wide searching capabilities of the Aminus3 main site. It is also a good motivation to tag your images accurately and often.
8) Sentence tags Tags should not be used as a clever way to write a sentence like "I like ice cream" This sentence will create 4 tags "i","like","ice","cream" and these things may not be very meaningful for searching your site.
Please save sentences for your photo description and use tags only to add meaningful words that describe the image. Think of quantifying Where, What, When, How, Why
9) How many tags ? You don't have to detail every element of your image, 5-10 tag words highlighting the main points should be sufficient.
10) Tags for categories? If the Aminus3 categories do not encompass your style or system of organization, you can use tags to create sub-categories. For example, all Still Life images could be tagged with "still-life" so that it is possible to see all of them on your blog from one URL.
11) Tags for themes? One possible idea of organizing images across Aminus3 is to use common tags by multiple contributers. For example. Silly Tuesday has become a great weekly theme where people post silly images every Tuesday. Using the tag "silly-tuesday" on these images would mean that it is possible to go to a URL to view all the images in this category. http://www.aminus3.com/tag/silly-tuesday/
It is also possible to start using coding conventions as keywords before the description. For example, for someone creating a theme about butterflies, they may ask everyone to tag their images like "theme-butterfly" so that it is clear these images belong to this theme.
Another idea may be to trace images of places so using the word "place" before a description would designate this image as documenting a place like "place-brussels".
This can be used for contests, themes or other creative uses. Get together with your fellow members and see how you can find creative ways to utilize tagging across Aminus3 (and feel free to share your thoughts or ideas in this thread).
