Well, well, I've noticed that there is one genre that we haven't touched yet in our critique game here and it is portraits. Maybe because I somehow shy away from photographing people ??....(hm.. perhaps I should get some therapy..??)

Anyway, let's remedy this and bring in a few portraits and candid shots of people, so you guys can hone your oratory and keen observation skills.

So, here it is: from the portfolio of the artist P Shorten

    Please, tell me this:

    1. What can you say about the photography rules and techniques
(composition, lighting, rule of thirds, story telling, etc., etc....) used in the image ?

    2. What can you learn from this image ?

I know, portraits are tough to critique because very often, they are so personal, so maybe you can invent your own question you want to answer or share with others.

Very nice portrait with good light and focus on the face and beautiful hair. I like the angle, framing and the natural expression captured - bravo! :)) I would love to see the face turned more towards the camera and the shoulders dropped, turned or cropped all together because the way she is standing it makes her shoulders look really wide/big.
But, overall a great portrait with wonderful colour and skin tone which is not always easy to achieve. Good work :)

    Magda,
Thanks for the input. I wasn't sure I liked the feeling of, sort of, looking down her top...as her mom I was a bit unhappy with that angle. I really did get to catch a moment with her, she stopped lifted her head, put her hands on her hips and pouted, ah, that's my girl!

But, those are the best moments! :)) Better a pout than a "posed look". Looking down her top is tasteful enough (without showing too much skin) - looks great to me but I'm sure when my girls are that age I will see it a bit differently ;)
    Keep up the good work!
