Hello, all, I have used an Olympus FE340,X855,C560 for some time now, and wanted some advice on where to start with a Nikon. I have used an old Cannon SLR for about 15 years, and borrowed my mother's Rebel a number of times... so I am familiar with principals of a camera with more options. My goal is to enhance my options with the priority settings, and full manual. I guess my main question is, should I start with a D40/40x or D60 and just purchase some quality glass, or go for a D90 with the lens kit? What are the benefits of either option.
My objective is to use the camera mainly for recreational purposes, and making some fine art type prints. I, however, would like to start taking head shots for musicians (I am beginning a PhD in music history... captive audience!) Photography provides my sanity in higher education! I have been saving for a bit, and will probably be able to spend between 700-1500... depending on how long I wait!
Because I have been using my awesome little camera for so long I don't know much about lens choices. I do, however, love macro. I feel as though I am biting off a bit more than I can chew!
If you have any advice I would really appreciate it!
I upgraded from a Pentax K100D to a Nikon D90 earlier this year, and have been very happy with the D90 and think I will probably keep it for a while based upon how I am using it and my plans for the future. I think there are a few things to consider when evaluating which camera is the best, such as:
- put your hands on each and try to run through some of the changes you could see yourself making on the camera. If you see yourself adjusting white balance or ISO frequently, how easy is it do do on each camera? - where will you utlimately use the photos - do you need a high MP camera to make large prints or to crop your images? - where will you be taking your pictures? If you are shooting in low light do you want a camera with low noise at high ISO? - is weight a consideration - do you want a smaller body for long hikes? - how much are you willing to spend and do you want cheap body and more glass to go with it, or a more expensive body and limited glass (and adding to later).
My suggestion would be D60 or D5000 and spent the money on lens. With D90 you get the ability to use old AF lens from Nikon and control of off camera flash without a flash commander unit. My believe is that a better (more expensive) lens would make a more noticeable difference on image quality than camera body. And lens will not obsolete as camera bodies do.
