I'm getting feedback of visitors about the fact that they are having trouble with enabling cookies. Every time they visit someone with a blog from Aminus3, it tells them that they can not leave a comment unless they enable cookies. It does this on every single Aminus3 site! One of them tried to set cookies for my main page, ... no luck. Then tried setting cookies from my image/page, ... no luck. Then tried setting cookies from the comment area, ... no luck there neither. Anyone else heard about this?
Can you find out which browser(s) your friends are using - aka Internet Explorer 8,7 or Firefox etc Are they sure they have cookies enabled? Do they have any kind of security software plug-in in their browser that may block cookies?
Hi Jason! Here's one of the answers I got, but I think this one is getting tired of trying now, so I will not bother him anymore ;)
"Everyone that has said that they are having the same problem has tried the same thing to correct it, as far as updating browsers, enabling cookies, etc. All other sites work regardless of whom or what they are, ... but Aminus3 is giving "some" visitors problems. No one should have to update their browsers for a simple blog, where other blog sites are just fine regardless of what browsers they are using".
Thanks Monique - that is a fair answer and it is unfortunate that your friend has reached that level of frustration.
We have not heard any other reports of this problem so it is hard to track down what is going on (which is why I was hoping the browser answer would provide a clue of where to start looking). For example, if everyone is using Internet Explorer and they all have they same anti-virus program - that might give us a better idea of why they are getting the error.
Perhaps if anyone else in the forum has heard of a similar problem, we can get some more information to debug this further. We'll also keep trying on our end to reproduce it.
It appears the issue has been tracked down to the browser plug-in AdBlock Plus Non Am3 members must add aminus3.com to the approved list (one time) and commenting should work for them after that
But now I've got visitors complaining about the anti-spam verification code. Apparently it has been changed and now they are forced to type two long words. I just checked it and for me it's even hard to read. Is this really necessary? I've never had spam on my blog. Couldn't this feature be made optional for the members?
Hi Monique - thanks for keeping us updated on the Aminus3 experience from our non-member audience.
We realize the extra wording is more cumbersome although it does make the comment process much more secure and less susceptible to Spammers sending comments en masse to all members.
We are looking at some ways to make this less painful for them while maintaining better security for users. Allowing the members to turn it off could be a possibility. Stay tuned and please let us know if you have any other suggestions in the mean time.
Thanks for sending out an update. This is still on our development plan, unfortunately we have not been able to address it yet. I will see what we can do to up the priority.
As my am3 blog is attracting more non am3 photobloggers these days, I've been trying out what it's like to comment on an am3 blog NOT signed in.
The good news: After the first comment on a member's photo, the web browser remembers the commenter's name, email and website -- even when the next comment is on a different am3 member's photos. This is with Firefox, Avast (free) antivirus and PC Tools (free) Spyware Doctor. I have had none of the problems mentioned above about not being able to comment.
The bad news: I too feel that the long antispam code of two words -- that sometimes forces the commenter to type a number such such as "4,076,098", for example, in place of one of the words, is a burden and a discouragement to comment at all. I do, however, understand that some form of antispam code is necessary. I wish that it could be simpler, though.
Another problem is that when I go to comment not signed in, I get a very small version of the photo that's slightly cropped. I've mentioned this to you in a message to support, Jason, and you say that I should have the same view of the photo as I would normally when signed in, but I don't. What do you make of that?
Having said all this, I've been to wonderful photoblogs and photo galleries where the situation is much worse: Flash sites where you make one wrong click and everything you've typed disappears. Blogs where when you make comments on more than one photo, you have to continually retype all your information because nothing is remembered. So the am3 situation is not that bad for me from the point of view of non am3 people commenting. It could still be streamlined though, I believe.
With regard to your observation about the slightly cropped smaller image...
I tried a test by accessing Aminus3 from Opera browser (after a fresh download of Opera where I've never been signed in and never been to Aminus3) and the image is the same as in Safari where I am signed in.
Can you send us a screen shot of the smaller cropped version you are seeing?
Sorry to start over again, but I really feel uncomfortable by the comments of my visitors about the annoying spam code. Is there a deadline already known about the possible change of the code? Since the majority of my visitors are non-members, I will have to consider changing to another photoblog :( and I would rather not.
We are close to a trial solution which we'll be sending more information to you about. For others interested in disabling the spam check on their comment form, please send a request to support@aminus3.com.
