What do you guys think about this idea: From time to time I would like to post here a link to a photo from a different artist with the following questions: 1. What can you say about the photography rules and technique (composition, lighting, rule of thirds, story telling, etc., etc....) used in the image ? ...and 2. What can you learn from this image ?
I think this would be a great way for everybody to hone their skills on talking about a photograph in a constructive way, learning different techniques and rules based on an example and how to look at an image with an artistic eye. Plus, it would give the featured artist more exposure (..and we all want that, don't we??)
Rules of the game: 1. be honest in your critique, point out not only the weak points but mostly the strong points of the image, we want to learn how things are done 2. be courteous and respectful, playing nice is the rule 3. humor, wit and charisma are encouraged, having fun and learning at the same time is the rule
Of course, I would never post a link to an artist's photo without her or his permission. Responding to this post with short statement that you want to participate in the game would do it. Respecting artists' copyright, privacy and wishes are paramount.
Oh, and anybody can take it on and introduce somebody else's image (provided you follow the rules).
If you're interested in how I include those image thumbnails with the link, read about it here.
Roman - I think this is an excellent idea. Your ground rules should provide a nice framework to generate some honest constructive critiques. Looking forward to trying this out.
Well Jason, I'm glad you like it but we have to see what the response from the community will be. Could you please make this a sticky post so it will stay always on top in the critique forum ? Oh, and I assume you said the "magic word" and you're in the game, right ?
Should we have a new image every week, lets say a new image every Sunday running for the whole week? That way there is enough time for members to get a chance to comment and know when to come back to view and comment on the next image in line...
Great to see all the new folks around. Hope to see everyone adding images and critiquing.
If you are looking for more useful critiques on your blog, you can use the Announcement block (under Admin->Account->Profile) to ask for critiques. As an example
Thank you to all who have taken the time to comment on my blog. I am looking for honest critiques of my images.
I agree with your idea, It can help everyone learn something new about different photography related topics, I am looking forward to follow this and see the results.
I think it would be very interesting and I'm sure I would learn a lot. But, when is it going to start? Or if you have started, where should I go? Thank you
It's great to see you here and I'm sure you'll learn a lot because we have a great number of talented photographers here ! It is very simple, really. On the top left of this page there is a list of forum groups, with one of them being "Photography". Under that you'll see a thread called "Critique My Image". Click that and start reading the posts. When I pick an image for our game here, I start the name of each post with "Critique Game - ...", so it easy to find and follow them. And also remember, the critique forum is for everybody to post their images and ask for help/comment/critique. As you've seen in the rules for this thread, you can participate either by commenting and critiquing other people's photographs or posting your own or you friend's picture (provided they agree, of course).
The idea is to encourage people to participate more in the forums, learn something new perhaps, and have lots of fun at the same time.
I wish to join too....and I am anxious to get some critiques or comments on my picture "Waterfront Flowers. I am just experiencing my new lens and this picture surprised me :-)
