    Hi All,

Haven't been here in awhile, looks like its starting to take off!

Anyway, I'm doing my first wedding later on this summer, for a friend of a friend. I'm shooting the big day for free on the understanding that I'm allowed to use the images for publicity purposes later if I wish (i.e. for a website or a portfolio, not for resale though). I'm just wondering how legal and contracty I should make this? Should I stick with a verbal agreement, or should I get something in writing just to cover my arse?

    Good question Dave

From what I've read, as a photographer, you have all rights to your photos to use or not use however you please. The only time that you give away those rights is when you explicitly do so in a written contract. If your friend is OK with a verbal agreement, you are likely better off than if you try writing up a contract as the contract may not be general enough and may bind you to some limitation that you would not have had if you had no contract in the first place.

Dan Heller is an outstanding resource for the business side of photography

Have a look at some of his articles on model releases and Copyright.
