We all are driven by visual images that have a message - and I am looking for feedback from the community of photographers that are famous that have inspired you.

My blog post today has more information on what specifically and why I am looking at this - but the broader question may be appealing to the community.

A fascinating post and I enjoyed reading all the responses on your page. I might suggest Minor White, not only because his photos are macro and of nature and very carefully done, but because he had quite interesting ideas about the place of photography in a meaningful life, and so you could see his photos and his words and see how to put them together. Admittedly, not a female photographer, but that's just my two cents.

Minor White is a great suggestion. Perhaps I should convince my wife that a few photographers is too limiting - just like a few composers of music is too limiting. I have just read the wikipedia entry for Minor White - and there is enough here for me to really dig deeper. Thanks for the suggestion, and also for reading the responses on teh other page.

I am captivated by photographer Steve Mc Curry . I admire his body of work and I would LOVE his lifestyle. His portraits are stunning ... oh don't listen to me go and have a look. Don't miss the Gallery section.

    Two spring to mind.

Bill Brandt - very distinctive style which won't be to everyone's taste, but successfully spanned different subject matter from landscape and architecture, to celebrity and nude.

    Jane Bown - portrait photographer.

What I like about both of these photographers is that they could both create images from what was in front of them (OK, Jane's portraits are mainly celebs, but she'd be just as good with an anybody in front of the lens - I don't know half her subjects anyway). Neither was dependent on exotic locations or fantastic sets, just good solid photographic values.

that is exactly the input I was looking for John - thank you. I will research both.

Interesting for me that Helen mentions Steve McCurry, above.

I've been returning to his site for quite a while now. Fabulous stuff!

Just the other day, I noticed that he now has a link to his photoblog, where others can make comments. I've done that twice so far, and my comments have been accepted, and my name there links back to my web galleries.

Here's the site again. (You'll see the link to the blog on the right):

One photographer that comes to my mind is Olivier Follmi. http://www.follmi.com/en/portfolios-follmi/portfolio.html
His photos capture a mood that captivates the viewer!
