I will post over fifty traditional still life shots a year, and see a lot of others in the community. Example Currently I use Abstract & Conceptual, but I would expect a different type of image in that category.

I believe we used to have a still life category some time back but removed it. Part of the reasoning was that it was not being utilized too frequently and part was due to the thinking that any still life image could also be put in another category (like Food for example in the link you posted).

As with most decisions on site features, we'd be happy to hear opinions from the community on whether this should be a distinct category or not. This will be a good thread to voice your opinions one way of the other.

    thanks,
    jason

I had many photos posted in the previous still life category that I had to move to miscellaneous, basically photos that could not fit in other categories, neither abstract for me, i have around 100 photos in that situation, the way around for me is to tag them as still-life but they are still under the miscellaneous category.

Thanks for the reply Alfredo, one because I had lost you from my Watch page, and secondly because the forum traffic is so meager : ]

Still Life "is" the subject when I study them, the actual name of what the light falls on is immaterial to me. For instance, the referenced image would not be about Food, but composition and light...if that makes any sense. More appropriately "Still Light".

I remember when there was a 'still life' category (but I'd forgotten that there even was a site forum). I suppose you can never have enough categories to please everyone, but I think 'still life' is a good enough description of a standard form that it be re-introduced. On the positive side, I'm happy about the new(ish) documentary & street category.

Regarding categories - I'd be interested in seeing categories that match some of the photo club categories for judging: for example, photojournalism, nature, creative, etc. In that sense, I could easily scan recent posts on AM3 (especially with all the new search capability) - and get a real sense of what this community feels are strong photos (by tracking comments, etc.). Has this been considered in the past?

    Interesting concept Bill
Categories are somewhat hard-wired at this time in terms of how we organize things across the site but there is always the possibility to change or update them.

Another way we may be able to gain some traction here is by making better use of tags (aka keywords on every photo upload)
For example - if we can get a stronger tagging initiative for sub-categories like photojournalism, nature, creative, then we can use the new www tag search to pull up a collection of images based on those tags

to get an idea of what I'm thinking... check out this link
    http://www.aminus3.com/tag/nature

(this one already has some great images included)

I am am putting some thought into a tag FAQ of sorts to encourage people to write accurate and correct keywords on their photos. This will help them show more prominently in community searches as well as organizing our collective content more effectively.

OK I give up! Actually I do understand the desirability of the 3 over 5 row thumbnail above the fold layout of /category and that 599 categories would be necessary to appease all. At present there is no tag option on /search, so the ranking algorithm for /tag seems to be around 500, and the chances of still life making a visual appearance is about 5 years of posting...unless I develop a Twitter following for the still-life tag, then it will only take 4 years 364 days : ] Still-life taggers unite! tweet that up.

Two general observations, not criticisms, just observations with specific detail only for clarity.

    1. Two word tags are automatically wrapped on the user page, i.e. still life becomes still over life with the link wrapping. A user may click on the life tag but the return will be a still. [I have no life for public consumption, no use searching : ]
    2. Redundant tags. i.e. While beta testing the search function, I discovered that my fellow users had quite a variety of tags for black and white images, b-w, b/w, bw, black, and etc. The two most popular tags were b-w and black, neither of which I had been using on a black and white site. I now use the two most popular tags and let it go. Where /search on black and white would obviously yields no results, a Google search on aminus3, black and white yields several results, and favorable page ranking for some : ]

Summation - something to the effect of "check /tags for popular keywords" might be helpful. Not necessarily accurate...just is...the people must be right.

Jerry - you've raised some good points

I'll count on you to get the still-life tag revolution in full swing :)

Tagging standards are definitely needed - I posted this in another thread (and am in the process of creating a mini tag FAQ to place somewhere prominently)

My recommendation is to use hyphens for tags so the proper still life tag would be still-life

With regard to Black and White - I personally have been using b-w but it is slightly discordant to have so many people denoting this in so many ways.

One possible solution is to auto-complete tag/keywords although this requires some heavy queries to maintain (at least in the current way that we've thought about doing it). Asking people to go to the /tags page is probably not gonna fly - better to get the education and options as close to the image upload page as possible. Any ideas here are welcome.

As for your google search terms "Aminus3 Black and White" does yield a familiar first hit indeed !

I now stand properly hyphen-tagged! I suppose black could be associated with the color attribute on either /search or /color. Seems a stretch. Thanks-alot! best-jerry
