    Tags are described as...

    • Word values, separated by spaces, to describe the subject and content of your image

While "Image Caption" is described as...

    • Short, concise description of the image (used by Google and other search engines)

I'm not sure I understand the distinction. So I often use the same words in both. But I'm sure that's not utilizing these fields in the best manner. Can someone describe the best way to use these fields?

You are doing the correct thing by putting the words in the tags box. For the caption, imagine a browser that does not know how to display images. What would you want to display in text in place of the image? What ever you think would aptly represent the picture is what you put in in the "Image Caption". I generally put the title into the Image caption. If the tags represent the image correctly, there is nothing wrong in using the same words in the "Image Caption" box. One other thing to remember is that Aminus3 uses the tags to order and categorize your images for displaying at other pages at Aminus3.

Another way to look at is that tags are used to organize images internally on Aminus3 (you can search all of your own photos by tags and soon we will have a search box on the front page to search all Aminus3 images by tag)

Image Caption is a way for external sites (like google) to find your image. You might want to be more concise in your image caption to describe the scene as if you were searching in google for this exact thing.

As an example, if I have a photo of my Mom wearing a blue hat, my tags might say "Mom,hat, blue, birthday" but my image caption might be more generic for a web search like "woman wearing blue hat" or "woman at birthday party"

    hope that makes sense!
